The third in RADII’s monthly series of events at ALL will be another live recording of Culture Editor Josh Feola’s B-Side China podcast. In June, Josh camped out in front of the DJ booth for a chat with multimedia artist Jiafeng about music, art, and creativity in China’s “post-internet” age. That conversation was recorded, and will be released in the forthcoming third season of B-Side China.

For our next B-Side live recording on Tuesday, August 13, Josh will be joined by visual artist Miao Jing and electronic music producer/composer Alex Wang. In different ways, each artist creates complex, challenging, often disorienting visual and audio (respectively) works that articulate a particular vision of humanity’s future — in Miao’s case, a technological singularity conversant with the deep cultural past, and in Wang’s, a future delimited by unsettling current trends in the area of mass surveillance, mega-urbanization and ecological degradation.

Following a live discussion and audience Q&A addressing each artist’s ideas about Audiovisual Sinofuturism, we’ll hang out and listen to some of the finest dark-timeline dance music emanating from China today.

About the artists:

Miao Jing is a visual artist, animation director, and co-founder of Hibanana Studio. His art explores spatial experience and cultural identities through immersive moving images. Most recently, he has collaborated with Beijing artist Jason Hou on immersive, audiovisual performance project 初· ZPTPJ:

It questions whether we are a species with amnesia and wonders where humanity is heading at the verge of technological singularity. Miao and Jason perform this story as two archivists of records, extracting audiovisual information on the stage. They strive to develop their “primal-futuristic” style of audiovisual language to provide the audience an immersive experience, transporting them to an alternate reality.

Originally from northeast China, producer/composer Alex Wang studied Recording Art at China’s Central Conservatory of Music, continuing his formal training with a degree in Computer Music Composition at the Peabody Institute conservatory program at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. After a stint he New York, Wang moved to Shanghai, where he currently live sand works. His latest release is 0%, a concept album framed by releasing label Zoom Lens as being about: “societal, urban shifts of modern day China and new, personal beginnings. A reset to 0. An authoritarian utopian society with “0” perceived flaws. 0 hope, etc.. Musically it mixes noise, nu-metal, black metal, and deconstructed club.”
